Koshi-no-kanbai holds a privileged position in the sake world. As one connoisseur put it, “Koshi-no^kanbai does not so much exhibit a certain flavor as a certain philosophy.” From the first sip it displays a variety of subtle, ineffable flavors, which converge and diffuse just on the edge of the mind’s awareness. It s elusive nature has given Koshi-no-kanbai the nickname “The phantom sake.” Bottle 500 ml

Delicate yet full of flavor, reticent but at the same time engaging. “Kin-muku” is the state of the art in Junmai Ginjo sake brewing. It has an evocative flavor to chew on, a slight natural sweetness and, underlying it all, the taste and feel of clear, pure spring water. Impeccably balanced, effortlesslyr ealized and very rarely encountered: annual overseas allocation is 36 cases/year

Delicately flavored, astonishingly subtle, impeccably balanced, this legendary label is the despair of sake critics in Japan, who confess that its flavor is impossible to describe. Layered nuances of enjoyment unfold on the palate for a full five seconds after the first sip. Appreciating this complex sake is more in the nature of an intellectual exercise: each taste asks the sake drinker more questions than it answers. Bottle 500 ml
Best Japanese food in LA. The owners are amazingly nice, and the wait staff knows just how to make the food taste the absolute best. This is a must if you're looking for the best Japanese food you can find.
MoreDelicious
Always love watching Sophia Chang, Fashionista804, on YouTube and she always raved about Takao and SO GOOD AND AWESOME QUALITY! Really fills you up and for aesthetics, got it to go so they can cut up the rolls 10/10 would definitely come back!
MoreIt was a wonderful dish even for Japanese who usually eat Japanese food.
Great, fresh, good service
Great sushi and really good service. Sit at the bar and have a chat with the cook.
Moregreat place but c photo about a waiter at coral tree cafe
Sushi is quality, the sashimi (which should've been the same quality) didn't seem nearly as good? With so many nice sushi places in Los Angeles, such a significant miss on the sashimi makes it hard to justify a return visit.
MoreI liked the food but was not blown away. Had much better sushi elsewhere...
Delicious food across the board from sashimi to Japanese egg custard. Very fresh and the crispy rice with toro and caviar is heavenly. Food is 6 - 7 stars. Sadly, though usually the service is prompt and courteous, on this occasion the service was extremely poor - 0 stars and was a real detraction from the meal. Usually when there is a problem with service, restaurants attempt to rectify this during the course of the meal; unfortunately on this occasion this was not the case.
MoreThis is a jewel Japanese Restaurant in Brentwood. If you order an Omakase, sushi might only be an option. Takao, the master of quite a few sushi chef (including a top ranked one) in WLA, serves quite a few of un-common Japanese dish. This old style joint has a feel of traditional Japanese restaurant in Japan except that most of customers by the bar might be westerners. I usually just seated there and told chef how much I would like to spend for that night and let him taking care the rest.
MoreBest lunch special
Always great !!
A fav location for tasty Japanese food. Got there about three, it wasn't crowded. Looking forward to a return visit. Feels like a place in Los Angeles I liked.
MoreAmazing Omakase, either sushi or small dishes.
Excellent
holy kao, you'll think your in japan.
Really enjoyed this place!Oishii desu ne;)Domo arigato Takaosan ...
Cylinder of bland tuna paste is wrapped in tasteless rice and covered in a dark-colored Kleenex; expect for it to fall apart as soon as it is lifted from the plate.
MoreBest sushi I have tried !!!
Food is delicious and fresh, I loved the chirashi bowl and red snapper. Our server kept getting the number of saki cups we needed wrong, and didn't refill our water, but was nice overall.
MoreMy party of four went earily, 5:30ish to miss the rush hour. The food was great, we went all out for their $150 each person for chefs choice. But the large families with several children and Tupperware meals from home wasn't pleasant. Sitting area is small, tight and loud. The phone rings off the wall for take out and the wait service was slow. Sit at the bar if you want a good experience.
MoreExcellent fresh sushi. Solid Japanese food and sushi options. Definitely worth a visit.
MoreFood is generally good, but sushi bar itself is pretty small . A bit noisy environment, not good place for private talks or romantic dinner .
MoreGreat restaurant Takao and Akira do the best Omakase meals
Great food!
Takao still provides an exceptional culinary experience. The cuts of his fish carried the day, with the wait staff providing immediate and courteous service. Kudos to the team. This review is not five stars because it seemed as if the portions were smaller in quantity and variety than my two previous visits (noted on Yelp). I believe they are making an effort to remain at the prices I recall from my 2014 visit, although, again, price is not a real issue when visiting Takao.I will return, so it's not like I'm upset. :)
MoreThe food is amazing and is the best family run sushi restaurant in LA you must try it. The food is high quality and the staff is great!
MoreVery flavorful ramen and generous portions. I had the spicy chicken which in my opinion wasn't very spicy however they had several hot sauces at the table to suit my needs. This place has over 100 different types of sake but I settled for a can of Sprite. Very intimate setting for a date night or lunch date. It's pretty pricey but then again I guess you would expect that in downtown LA.
MoreMany Japanese staff can eat Japanese food.
Top class sushi
The quality was very good and they had some interesting dishes. I think the price was a bit high for the ingredients and overall creativity though. I would prefer to go to Shiki for these prices, felt Takao was missing that wow factor that they are charging for.
MoreAmazing sushi place! Was super busy and we sat at the bar because table would have been an 30 to 40 mins. Best salmon belly I have ever had. Will definitely come back.
MoreI found out about the place because of Netflix documentary Chef's Table and since then always wanted to go and meet Chef Takao and taste his food. I finally got to go and ordered the Omakase menu. It was a whole new and different experience and I got to taste really different Japanese dishes from what I'm used to in my country and my trips abroad. It was quite an interesting experience overall and I even got to take a picture with Takao! He's a very nice and humble person. Service is very good, starting from the moment you book your reservation. The restaurant has kind of a family vibe and they make you feel very welcomed. That's probably why a lot of locals visit the place and are regular customers. I stayed for a while talking to one of those customers and got the chance to speak a little bit with Takao and his crew. It's definitely a place you want to visit if you have the chance. Enjoy!
MoreAmazing Omakase
Food is good (take out)
This place is awesomely amazingly awesome !!! Go see the owners Son! He is so cool 😎
MoreThe best, awesome, love it
Everything i had was exceptional, miso broth rich and fully developed. Black cod delicate and perfectly cooked. Amazing sushi!
MoreExcellent, the food is of very good quality and the food is exquisite. The sushi was melting in the mouth. The tuna tartare with truffle was amazing. In short, go there!Just the deco is a bit minimalist.
MoreThis restaurant has first-rate service and delicious menu. One of the best spot in town. The food came out fast and the rates are reasonable. Recommended.
MoreSoooo good
Authentic and fresh sushi at a great price point. 100% recommend.
This site is my favorite restaurant. Of all restaurants I know I like it most. I always suggests to my friends to go to visit this restaurant. when I feel like having a good lunchon, this place comes straightaway to my head. excellent and all kinds of food and a rich menu.helpful team, and agreeable atmosphere. In addition to that, the price is affordable. I tell about this restaurant with no hesitation.
MoreIts nice and has the friendly chef’s table in Santa Monica
Amazing food and service.
Crispy rice spicy tuna was a real let down for a place that's better rated. Sushi was fresh but whole meal wasn't worth the very high price.
MoreWe ate lite so didn't venture far into the menu; that didn't keep us from admiring the BEAUTIFUL things distributed to fellow diners over the night or overhearing pleased diners who enthused openly (sometimes loudly) over something delicious. When I entered most of the tables had reserved signs. They were filled from that point on in the evening. The sushi we did get was quiet and delicious. Texture is sometimes the most important thing in raw foods. You don't notice it so much unless it's bad, or really good. It's really good at Takao. Their little rolls looked beautiful. Things resting on banana leaves, cooked items, looked delicious. The decor is clean, simple and light. It's much more lovely than it appears from outside. It's a little tight, especially at the sushi bar where we sat.Overall, very nice.
